Coat

Like many other terrier breeds the Glen of Imaal Terrier has a wire-haired coat. This means that the coat is built up out of two layers: a relatively short, woolly undercoat, covered by a much harsher outer coat. The Glen's topcoat, formed by straight wiry hair, is not so hard all over the dog's body. Especially on the head and the legs it is not so hard in structure, although it should not be soft and silky in those places. The coat of the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier should be trimmed, that means that the dead hairs, including the roots, are removed (plucked). It's not an easy job to trim the Glen. In this chapter we give some information about the materials which are required for the maintenance of the Glen's coat and we advise on how to trim the dog.
