Writing a book on the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier may well be called a vocation. We are talking about a rare breed here. When taking a look at what has already been written on this special breed of terrier, one may well become disillusioned. Informative literature is scarce and the available information leaves a lot to be desired. A complete historical background has to be based on mere shreds of information.

It was years ago that I first encountered the Glen, in a cheap little book on terrier breeds. I was fortunate; no more than six months later I owned my first Glen. Working at a veterinary surgery at the time, dozens of dogs passed through my hands every day. And coming home to my Glen of Imaal Terrier, I was surprised at the fact that so few people could call themselves the proud owners of such a wonderful dog. All those dogs I saw each day were easily surpassed by the Glen.

How much longer can the Glen be considered to be a rare breed? Many people are waiting for a pup: not much of a surprise to all those people who already own Glen of Imaal Terriers. It's remarkable that you can be proud to be the owner of a rather exclusive dog, and nevertheless, at the same time, still grant others the pleasure of owning a Glen.

The book you are going to read has been written with a great deal of love for the breed. We have poured all our knowledge into it and have gathered as much information as possible, in order to give you a clear idea of what the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier is.

This book could not have been written without the help of many friends of the Glen of Imaal Terrier, who will be acknowledged at the back of the book.
We hope this book may provide you with some new information about the Glen and we wish you pleasant reading.

I first encountered a Glen of Imaal Terrier in the late eighties, when one was brought to my grooming shop for a trim. I have always remembered that dog due to its remarkable build and pleasant character. Several years ago I ran into some representatives of this breed again. This was at a family day organised by the breed association, where I was asked to judge the grooming of the dogs and inform the owners about the general care for their dog, and specifically about the care for the dogs coat.

I have been fascinated by the Glens ever since. I hope that by writing this book, we can interest many people in this breed. We may also be able to tell Glen owners a new thing or two about caring for and breeding the Glen of Imaal Terrier.

I hope that the future may provide us with the chance to encounter more than just the occasional Glen, and that these dogs may be healthy, well-cared-for and well-groomed.
May this book contribute to that cause.
